Things to Consider When Choosing a Fence for Your Dog

Posted on

A fence around your property intended to keep your dog in the yard and safe from harm can be great if your dog likes to roam. Installing animal-friendly fences is essential for the safety of your pup. Here are some great options that can make the fence work in your situation while still looking good.

1. Standard Chain Link Fencing

Fencing your yard with standard chain-link fencing does not do much for privacy, but it is a reliable and robust fence material that will keep your dog in the yard, and it does not require a lot of maintenance after it is installed.

Chain link is one of many animal-friendly fences that allows your dog to still interact with the world around them. For example, if your dog is a barker or growler, it may not be the perfect solution. For friendly dogs that love to see people and say hello from time to time, this might be the ideal fence for your yard.

2. Wooden Fencing

One of the most animal-friendly fences you can install is a classic wooden fence that slats in the wood just large enough for your pet to see through but keeps them in the yard and safe from any danger. A wooden fence is sturdy and will last many years but will need painting from time to time to keep the wood sealed against the weather.

Wood fencing also offers some excellent style for your home, and if you want the dog to be able to see out, there are some fun ideas like installing a porthole window in the fence so the dog can look out at the world not get out. You can find these plexiglass portholes at marine supply stores, and they are simple to install in the fence.

If you have kids playing in the yard as well, they can be fun for both your dog and your kids to peer out through as people walk past on the sidewalk along the fence.

3. Digging Dogs

Consider your dog's ability to dig under the fence before making your decision. If your dog is a digger, you may want to have a concrete footing poured around the base of the fence and bring the fencing material all the way to the concrete. This will discourage digging, and you can set the fence posts in the concrete to add rigidity to the fence.

If you are not comfortable installing an animal-friendly fence system in your yard, hire a professional fence company to help you.
